Description

**First Time At Auction**

Central Asia, Nepal, Himalayan region, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A striking festival mask, hand-carved from hard wood with bulging eyes, a full nose, tall ears, puffy cheeks, and an open mouth beneath a thin mustache. A third eye rests in the center of the forehead between a pair of flaming eye brows, and a small metal wire is hooked through the eyes for suspension. The wrathful face on this mask is perhaps a depiction of Mahakala, the tantric figure known as the "Great Black One" or "Great Time." Time is believed to be the destroyer of all things, and is therefore symbolically-associated with death. Size: 7.375" W x 8.125" H (18.7 cm x 20.6 cm).

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired in 2016
