Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. A fierce wooden festival mask, hand-carved with bulging eyes, a large, snub nose, and a mouth full of huge canines and protruding tongue. The face is covered in flourishes and scrolls, and topped by a crown featuring five leering skulls. The face depicted in the mask is probably Mahakala, the figure known as "Great Black One" or "Great Time." Time is believed to be the destroyer of everything, and is therefore symbolic of death. Size: 4.25" L x 8.15" W x 11" H (10.8 cm x 20.7 cm x 27.9 cm)
