Description
Latin America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century CE. An early example of a hand-carved and hand-painted face mask depicting a bull with a fierce countenance in hues of black, brown, white, pink, and red. His prominent, separately-carved horns, flaring nostrils, determined-looking eyes, and lapping tongue make for an intimidating mask most likely used in the Dia de Todos los Santos (All-Saints Day) celebration in Guatemala. Animals are typically viewed as sacred in Guatemalan culture, and many zoomorphic visages are used in festival masks and forming stories around each depiction. A wonderful example! Size: 6.875" W x 6" H (17.5 cm x 15.2 cm).
