Indonesia, Bali or Java, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wood festival mask with prominent bulging eyes, a bulbous nose, a horse hair moustache, and a toothy, white-painted smile. Masks like this example have been worn for centuries during dramatic dances enacted during festivals or other celebrations that depict traditional stories of kings, princes, heroes, and myths. In these dances, the entire story is performed by only for or five actors playing all of the parts, both male and female. As a result, actors will have around forty masks like this one that are only his; there is believed to be a special bond between actor and mask and that when he dons the mask, he enters a kind of trance, connected to the spiritual world. Size: 7" W x 9.25" H (17.8 cm x 23.5 cm).

Condition
Small repair to mouth with hairline crack to chin just below. Age-commensurate surface wear, small chips and losses to peripheries, fading and losses to pigmentation, otherwise very good.
