Central America, Guatemala, ca. early 20th century. This is a remarkable hand carved wooden dance mask that represents a character from the Dance of the Conquest, and inlaid with realistic glass eyes, that lend a haunting life-like quality to the visage! The mask is naturalistic, with rounded chin, slightly parted lip, well-formed nose, and bushy mustache. The furrowed brow creates a surprised expression, and the glass eyes have a striking intensity against the rosy, red skin. Masks, such as this one, were often made and worn during festivals and parades. The Dance of Conquest masks were likely created during colonial times to celebrate the conquest and conversion of the native peoples, but over time these masks have become seen as a traditional part of Guatemalan history. Nicks and chips to face, pigment, peripheries, and verso, with light weathering to outward surfaces of glass eyes, chipping and fading to pigment, and several stable fissures. Nice preservation to pigment and glass eyes. Mounted with modern metal wire on verso for suspension and display purposes.
