**First Time At Auction**
Central America, Mexico or Guatemala, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand carved and beautifully painted wooden monkey mask with naturalistic simian features. In Guatemala and Mexico, the indigenous cultures have traditionally used masks in dances that feature a narrative, generally involving parrying evil spirits or myths centered on fertility or yielding a healthy harvest. This mask may have been used during Danza de los monos (Dance of the monkeys)or Baile de los Animalitos (Dance of the Little Animals). Size: 8" L x 5.5" W (20.3 cm x 14 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Stable pressure cracks and fissures. Chips and abrasions to ears, and losses to wood on verso. Fading to pigments and stains. Nice weathering and patina.
