Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sukhothai Period, ca. 14th century CE. A massive head of Buddha that is hand-carved from mottled gray and red-brown sandstone with beige, khaki, citrine, and chocolate inclusions, perhaps from a larger relief panel of gargantuan size. The serene countenance presents Buddha with generously lidded, downcast eyes beneath sweeping brows, a slender nose with delineated nostrils, full lips with a gentle outline and a grooved philtrum, and flush cheeks that taper downwards to form the rounded chin. Both fragmentary ears flank the sides of his head, and his coiffure is comprised from dozens of corkscrew-form hair nodules. Buddha's fleshy tones are formed via applied yellow and white pigment that perhaps accentuated himself and the scene around him. A fantastic and venerable example of a Sukhothai Buddha! Size: 10.2" W x 12.75" H (25.9 cm x 32.4 cm); 22.4" H (56.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
This is a fragment of a larger figural relief scene as indicated by relatively planar verso. Repair and restoration to proper left side of top lip, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Losses to areas of both ears, coiffure, and neckline as shown. Surfaces are extensively cleaned and resurfaced. Nicks and abrasions to nose, eyes, chin, and mouth, with smooth encrustations within some recessed areas, light pitting in scattered areas, and roughness along verso. Wonderful preservation to finer details particularly on face and nice earthen deposits throughout. Remains of yellow and white pigment across face. Drilled through bottom of neck for mounting and display purposes.
