Boston & Worcester Fixed Globe Lantern Project

Description

The Boston & Worcester Railroad existed until 1969. That year it merged with the Western Railroad to become the Boston & Albany Railroad This lantern is a project that requires some work to completely restore it. I added a few parts to the original consignment. The lantern is a pretty standard example with ornate B&WRR wheel cut lettering. The cutting resembles New England Glass markings with the exception of the "&". The glass is very heavy and I can guarantee the authenticity of this lantern. There is some damage to the top of the globe. The base of the globe is in its original plaster and the base is fine. The base has the earliest style burner and collar. They are both pewter. This metal is very soft and brass replaced pewter by the 1870s. The flat bail has a hole in the top.
I do not do restorations. I will provide the following instructions " You'll need a steel wire (solid) and you'll have to heat it with a torch and feed it through the top assembly and make loops on the ends so that the bail will hang onto the conical dome. Note the two holes in the dome for this purpose. The top will then be ready to plaster to the top of the globe. The globe does not have much to hold onto so making it just a shelf display piece would be a good idea.
