Item Details
Description
This is a well known style of frame and also cutting for the Northern of New Hampshire. This is an "Engine Base" design. This term comes from 1850's catalogs. It is narrow and was probably placed in the box under an Engineer's seat. The frame is a diamond-star-diamond vent with a conical top. It has a standard flat bail. The base uses a "cup" assembly with a nut on a threaded post. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE NUT during the preview. It is easy to crack the globe doing this. Buy it and you can tighten it all you want.
The globe is an interesting design. The basic globe is free blown and then both the top and bottom rims are applied using a thick thread of glass. You can see evidence of where the glass is "rolled" on and it is often mistaken as a crack. It's not a crack, it;'s the way it was made. The overall height is 11" without the bail. The visible portion of the globe is about 5". This is standard but not critical because there are no vertical supporting wires. There is old plaster on the base collar. This lantern was never tinkered with. It is 150 years old. This is a Boston & Maine predecessor that ran from Concord to White River Junction.
