For some reason the Concord Railroad in New Hampshire ordered many fixed globe lanterns with the road initials stamped on the vent tube area. Another oddity about these lanterns is the lack of marking on the globes. This frame was made by New England Glass Company. The 5 point rounded end stars in the vents is the give-away on this maker. The fount is loose and packed in wadding to keep it from knocking up against the globe. The globe measures 5 7/8" in the visible area and this is standard for this type of lantern. The globe has applied flanges on the top and bottom. These were used to give the plaster something to grab onto up against the thin tin frame. It looks like there is a crack in the upper flange but this is just a line that always comes up when the flange is applied after the basic globe was free blown. The glass blower would wrap a hot pencil thick ribbon to make the flanges. The glass is solid red, as it should be. A nice New England example with color.
