Description
Attributed to the Ticonderoga "Memento Mori" carver, inscribed "George WooLcott : his horn / Made at Ticonderoga : November 9 : 1759" (identified with George Woolcott, 1747-1809, from Newington, Ct., who would have been 12 at the date on the horn; two older brothers, Caleb and Justus, were both privates in the 5th Company of Gen. Lyman's Ct. Regiment, and they may have commissioned it as a souvenir for their brother; George served in 1775 as an Ensign in the 2nd Ct. Regiment) the inscription enclosed in an elaborate cartouche; cow horn with two engrailed step-downs toward the spout; domed wooden butt cap secured with copper nails, with remnants of nails for suspension, 12 1/8 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, August, 2002. Accompanied by copies of documents and research.
