Description
A fine large horn with map, inscribed "SAMUEL * MAN / HIS HIS Horn. WRITTEN at FORT . FREDERICK . on S.t. John's RIVER * IN Nova . Scotia / June. 10. 1759" (identified with Samuel Man, dates unknown, who served in the 4th Connecticut Regiment, mustered in Fairfield, Ct., from 1756 and in the 2nd Ct. Regiment from 1761. In 1759 the 4th was engaged in operations against French settlers on the St. John River, building Ft. Frederick, present St. John, New Brunswick in 1758) further engraved with a large plan of the new fort with its ravelin, a sketch map of the St. John River near the fort, and a careful notation of the "Brew House" (where spruce beer was made), interspersed with fish, a crescent moon, and stylized plants; a large cow horn with carved spout and slightly domed wooden butt cap, centering a capstan post and ring for suspension, 13 7/8 in. L.
Provenance: From the estate of a Maryland collector. Purchased from William Guthman, September, 1989. Together with copies of various documentation.

The wooden cap with some wear; the post reset during active use
