14,000 Acres of Land Sold in MA Bay Colony! Awarded for War Service
A land deed for a remarkable 14,000 acres of land in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 7.25" x 12.25", Hampshire County, Massachusetts, dated November 10, 1730. An indenture between Nathaniel Alexander and Juda Hutchinson, conveying "a certain tract or parcel of land in within the township of Northampton…the whole of which contains about fourteen thousand acres" for £12 [over £3,000 in today's currency]. Signed and sealed by Alexander and witnessed by one Benjamin Griggs. The document was sworn to before Justice of the Peace, Samuel Dwight, six years later on June 22, 1736. The deed has flattened folds, with small separations and holes. Uneven toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Boldly signed.
Nathaniel Alexander (1652-1742) was included in an account of soldiers who were at the “Falls Fight,” compiled in the 1730s to determine who should receive a grant of land in Deerfield for their service. The Battle of Turner's Falls (also known as the Battle of Grand Falls or the Peskeompscut-Wissantinnewag Massacre) occurred on May 19, 1676, during King Phillip's War. A militia of 150-160 troops ambushed a sleeping group of Algonquins, killing between 100-200 people, mostly women and children. A counterattack/strategic withdrawal saw the native warriors kill 38 militiamen, but they were ultimately driven from the land. Judah Hutchinson (1664-1741) was a prominent man in Northfield during the Second Settlement.
