Description

Robert Treat Paine 1760 DS as Justice of the Peace

Document signed, measuring 7.75" x 12.5", dated March 8, 1760, Bristol County, MA. Land deed in which three gentlemen, referred to in the contract as Benjamin, George, and Henry, are selling a plot of land located in the town of Taunton for twenty four pounds eight shillings to one Benjamin King. Paine writes and signs on verso in part, "Bristol, March 8th 1760… Benjamin Williams, George Godfrey Esqr. & Capt. Henry Hodges acknowledges the above… before Robt Treat Paine Jus of Peace". General, uneven surface toning throughout with areas of darkened soiling in places. The document's front has been silked. Overall, very good with a pristine signature!

Robert Treat Paine (1731-1814) was an American lawyer, politician and Founding Father of the United States who signed the Continental Association and the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Massachusetts. He served as the state's first attorney general and as an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the state's highest court.
