Wonderful and rare albumen photograph of General Robert E. Lee and his officers in their first meeting since the surrender at Appomattox, Virginia in 1865. The image was taken at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in August 1869, where the former soldiers met to discuss "the orphaned children of the Lost Cause.”

This is the only “from life” photograph of Lee with his Generals in existence, during the war or after.

The subjects are: left to right standing: General James Conner, General Martin Witherspoon Gary, General John B. Magruder, General Robert D. Lilley, General P. G. T. Beauregard, General Alexander Lawton, General Henry A. Wise, General Joseph Lancaster Brent; left to right seated: Blacque Bey (Turkish Minister to the United States), General Robert E. Lee, Philanthropist George Peabody, Philanthropist William Wilson Corcoran, James Lyons (a Virginia lawyer).

The photograph itself measures roughly 5.5" x 7.5" and is affixed to a mount that measures 10" x 8". It is in excellent condition and is housed in what may be an original frame. A period ink inscription below the photo attempts to identify all the men.
