Description
Paper slip signed by Robert Treat Paine, a member of the Continental Congress (from the colony of Massachusetts) and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This is a partly printed document and mostly completed in Paine's hand. It measures 7" ? 7 ?" and is dated July 5, 1765. It is an order to the sheriff of Bristol County to ".. Attach the Goods or Estate ofValentine Wheeler of Rehoboth.. the Value of Eighteen Pounds.." Paine adds a lengthy, twelve line set of conditions for the order. His large, bold endorsing signature "Paine" appears on the verso. Margins are rough at the bottom resulting in minor loss, but not to the text. Light toning at folds is present.
