Superb 1686 CT Colony Land Deed

CONNECTICUT COLONY. Manuscript Document Signed, “Humphrey Pryor”, 1p on a bifold sheet, 11.75" x 7.5", Windsor, May 6, 1686. Docket of recording on the third page, pages 2 and 4 are blank. Remnants of red wax seal at Pryor’s signature. Document is well worn, with paper loss at fold intersections, soiling, foxing, and chipping at edges.

The land deed reads, in part, with original spelling unchanged, “I Humphry Prier of Windsor in the County of Hartford in the Colony of Connecticut in New England…have Given Graunted Exchanged and Barttered with Tahan Hill of Simsbury a certain house with ye land belonging to it orchard Fenceses and all the appurtinances…I have good right full power & lawfull Authority…to Exchange…the sd housing land…without any let hindrance Deniall contradiction Impediment Interruption eviction ejection by me the sd Humphry Prier…”

The deed is then signed by witnesses Tahan Grant and Enoch Drake. On May 11, 1686, Benjamin Newberry, as Assistant, also signs his acknowledgment of the deed.

Humphrey Prior, aka "Pryor" (1643-1719) was born in Scituate, Plymouth Colony. His father, Daniel Thomas Prior, was 23 and his mother, Mary Hatch, was 12. He married Ann Osborn in 1663, in Windsor, Connecticut Colony. They had at least three sons. He died, and was buried, in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.

Tahan Hill (1659-1692) was born in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut Colony. His father, Luke Hill, was 36 and his mother, Mary Hoyt, was 24. He married Hannah Parmelee in 1688, in New Haven, Connecticut Colony. They had at least one son and one daughter. He died, and was buried, in Guilford, New Haven, Connecticut.

Tahan Grant (1634-1693) was a blacksmith, brander of horses, constable, and bailiff.

Enoch Drake Sr. (1655-1698) was born in Windsor, Connecticut Colony. His father, John Drake Jr., was 39 and his mother, Hannah Moore, was 27. He married Sarah Porter in 1680, in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut Colony. They had at least three sons and two daughters. He died, and was buried, in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut Colony.

Benjamin Newberry (1624-1689) was a Captain in the local militia. Newberry was an original patentee in Simsbury, just to the west of Windsor, which was incorporated in 1670; the land he owned became known as Newberry’s Plain, and later as Westover’s Plain and Hoskins Station. Well respected in Windsor, Newberry was Windsor's deputy to the Connecticut General Court in fifty sessions between 1656 and 1684, and in 1685 was elected an assistant of the Colony; he held, as well, various other positions in both the town and colony governments.
