Eleazer Lusher Signed 1664 Early Colonial Massachusetts Land Deed

1p, measuring 12" x 15.25", Boston, dated March 1, 1664. An early colonial Massachusetts deed for a house plot of land in Dedham belonging to Theophilus Frary. Sold to Peter Woodward of Dedham for an unknown amount (ink faded). Signed "Theophilus Frary" and by his wife, "Hanna Frary". Also signed by Hannah's brother, "Jacob Elliot". Below the main text is a signed statement of consent by Hannah Frary, signed twice. The statement was acknowledged by Eleazer Lusher, signed "Elea: Lusher" and dated March 6, 1665. Docketing on verso. The document has flattened folds, with separations and numerous holes. Chipping at the edges and folds, with some loss of text. Moderated toning, foxing, and dampstaining throughout. Boldly signed by all. Please refer to photographs for further condition information.

Eleazer Lusher (? - 1672) was a politician, military leader, and one of the most powerful men in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He served on Dedham's Board of Selectmen for 29 one-year terms and as Town Clerk for 23 years, beginning in 1641. Along with Peter Woodward (c. 1613-1685), he was a signer of the Dedham Covenant, which governed the early settlement of Dedham and mandated that only those with similar, Puritan, community values could live in the town. It also required each resident to pay their fair share of taxes for the common good.

Theophilus Frary (1629-1700) became the third Deacon of the Old South Church in 1685. He married Hannah Elliot (1635-c.1690) and the couple had twelve children together. Theophilus and Hannah are also the 8th great-grandparents of George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st President of the United States and 9th great-grandparents of George Walker Bush, the 43rd President of the United States.
