Description
Early 1733 Colonial Massachusetts Articles of Agreement and Obligation
1p, measuring 7.5" x 12", Essex, Massachusetts, dated March 20, 1733. Signed "Phinehas Jones" along with the mark of Moses Fluant. The document is an Articles of Agreement and Obligation between the two men, concerning money due on a piece of land granted to Elizabeth Bryars, Fluant's wife's mother. The grant included "a certain tract of Upland containing about one hundred acres & a piece of salt meadow or marsh containing about one hundred & eighty acres…" Signed as witnesses by Henry Hale and William Trow. The document has flattened folds with two holes and separations starting. Loss of paper at the upper left edge. Toning, foxing, and staining throughout. Overall good.
It is possible that Henry Hale was a relative of John Hale, who was a Puritan minister in Massachusetts and a prominent player in the Salem witch trials. There is record of a Henry Hale, born December 19, 1712, who was the youngest son of Robert Hale. Robert Hale was born from Reverend Hale's first marriage to Rebecca Byles.
