Julian IP-49. Jamieson-8. Betts-401. Rare Original Dies 1757 George II Indian Peace Medal certified Genuine by PCGS. This medal is also referred to as the “Treaty of Easton” or “Duffield” Indian Peace Medal. This medal is one of several that were struck by Joseph Richardson, Sr. in copper prior to 1784 when he died. This is struck in Bronzed Copper from the original dies and at an early state of obverse die deterioration dating circa 1800. Engraved by Edward Duffield of Philadelphia, this medal was the first peace medal made in America. It was commissioned and presented by the Friendly Association, a group of Pennsylvania Quakers that attempted to mediate negotiations between Delaware Indians and the Pennsylvania Assembly. Benjamin Franklin and members of the Friendly Association distributed these medals to Native Americans as tokens of goodwill at the Treaty of Easton in 1757.

“Later, the (original Duffield) dies passed to Joseph Richardson, then later to his son, Joseph, Jr. In 1813, Richardson, Jr. wrote to a friend, Thomas Wistar, recounting that his father had struck the Duffield Medals and that the dies had been in the family for many years. Richardson made restrikes from the dies, which, by then, had begun to crack horizontally.” Note that even the very last examples of this rare medal, stuck from the original dies and when they were almost completely broken, are rare and quite valuable.
