1862 Official “Confederate Seal” in Copper
1862-Dated American Civil War Era, Official Confederate Seal Shell, Struck in Copper, Lead Filled Back, Choice Extremely Fine.
This is an authentic, rare large 3.5” (91mm) diameter (plus outer rim edge), Uniface Official Confederate States Seal Metal Shell. It features a design with a central image of General George Washington on horseback, encircled by a ring of crops and an outside ring: THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA - 22 FEBRUARY 1862 - DEO VINDICE.” The detailing is excellent, every detail being sharp and clear. The surfaces are nice and smooth, with minor spots and some expected deeper age toning. The back has been lead filled adding studiness and weight. We previously sold a solid copper example of this Seal in our March 1998 auction which hammered for $5,500 and a solid Copper Seal for $3,450 in 2004 and only one other with lead filled backing. Always considered to be a fantastic display piece for historic medal collectors, Civil War specialists, or a museum collection interested in the medallic rarities of the Confederacy. Rare and always popular with Civil War collectors.
