Description
Details:
In an attempt to fund the war effort in 1861, the Confederate States of America (CSA) sold bonds worth $150 million in the so-called Bankers Loan. After tapping various avenues of taxation and debt, and failed efforts in collecting goods in exchange for currency, taxes were allowed to be paid in inflated state currency. Consequently, government paper money fed inflation, which served as an inverse tax on Confederate citizen. This domino effect created a state of distress from which the Confederate economy never recovered.
