Benj. Lincoln & T. Melville Signed Import Doc for Port of Boston, Slabbed NM7
A Port of Boston importation document signed by Benjamin Lincoln and Thomas Melville. 1p, measuring 9.5" x 5.25", Boston, dated May 23, 1806. Signed "Benjamin Lincoln" as Collector and by the Inspector "T. Melville." This document, No. 11062, certifies that J & W Hurd, aboard the American Vessel "Levant Eames" imported 127 gallons of Brandy. The document appears to have been backed with archival material. With flattened folds, slightly rough edges, and staining at the margins. Boldly signed. PSA Slabbed and Graded NM7, measuring 9.75" x 13" overall.
Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810) was a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, seeing action in the battles of Saratoga, the 1780 Siege of Charleston, and the British surrender at Yorktown. After the war be stayed in public service, serving one term as Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, and many years as Collector of the Port of Boston. He finally retired in 1809, one year before his death.
Thomas Melville (1751-1832) was a Boston merchant, member of the Sons of Liberty, participant in the Boston Tea Party, and a major in the American Revolutionary War. During the war, Melville served in the Rhode Island campaigns of 1777 and 1779. After the war he became a Surveyor for the Port of Boston, which was a lucrative and much sought after position. Melville was also the paternal grandfather of Herman Melville, author of "Moby Dick".
