James Monroe Memorial Pamphlet for the Transfer of His Remains, Nearly 30 Years After his Death
A program of arrangements detailing the transfer of former President James Monroe's remains from the state of New York to his home state of Virginia. Pamphlet, 4pp, measuring 4.75" x 7.25", dated July 2, 1858, New York, NY. Listed in detail is the Order of Procession, with pallbearers including General Winfield Scott and William "Boss" Tweed. The event would come 27 years after Monroe's death. Exhibits moderate wear, including darkened toning, flattened creasing, and areas of tearing at folds. Else, good condition.
President James Monroe died in New York City on Independence Day 1831, and was interred in Marble Cemetery. In 1856, Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise sought to repatriate Monroe's remains to his native state. The state appropriated funds, and Monroe's remains were transported to Richmond aboard the steamship Jamestown two years later.
