Description

Lincoln Blood Stained Sheet from his Death Chamber. CAG Encapsulated.

Sheet swatch, .625" x .25", taken from the room where Abraham Lincoln died in the Peterson boarding house, and stained with Lincoln's blood. Encapsulated by CAG, measuring 2.375'' x 3.375''.

This swatch of the sheet was taken from the Peterson Boarding House and obtained by Charles K. Tuckerman, an author, politician and the first American Minister to Greece, who was in Washington at the time of the assassination. The original, larger mounted section of cloth, found in Tuckerman's papers, bore on the paper mount his initialed provenance: "Relic from the death bed of Abraham Lincoln, stained with his blood. Taken from his death chamber. CKT." A color copy of the original sheet and Tuckerman's provenance is included in the lot along with a copy of a letter by autograph expert Mary Benjamin on Walter R. Benjamin letterhead.

On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was assassinated by well-known stage actor John Wilkes Booth, while attending the play Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.
