Description
Benjamin Harrison Signed Check, Ca. 1877
Signed check, measuring 2.875" x 7.75", dated November 1, 1877, Indianapolis, IN. An unnumbered check, written out in Harrison's hand, paying to the order of an unknown recipient a sum of one hundred and fifty-six dollars and seventy-five cents. Boldly signed "Benj. Harrison" at lower right. Expected cancellation punctures can be found above "H" of Harrison, and at far left. Exhibits slight ink smudging to signature, darkened soiling throughout, as well as a small, negligible section of tape on verso. A good example overall.
Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 23rd president of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He was a member of the Harrison family of Virginia- a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and a great-grandson of founding father Benjamin Harrison V. A Republican, Harrison was elected to the presidency in 1888, defeating the Democratic incumbent Grover Cleveland in the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote.
