Description

Benjamin Harrison Naval Appointment of Captain John R. Bartlett, 1892

Partial-printed DS, measuring 14.5" x 18", dated July 12, 1892, Washington, D.C. An military appointment naming "John R. Bartlett… Captain in the Navy, from the 1st Day of July 1892 in the service of the United States." Signed below by the President as "Benj. Harrison" and countersigned by Benjamin Franklin Tracy as Secretary of the Navy, featuring intact blue seal of the Department of the U.S. Navy. Exhibits moderate wear, including scattered foxing, surface creasing, and minor tearing along perimeter. Else, very good with bold signatures.

Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the 23rd president of the United States from 1889 to 1893. He was a member of the Harrison family of Virginia; a grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, and a great-grandson of Benjamin Harrison V, a Founding Father. A Republican, Harrison was elected to the presidency in 1888, defeating the Democratic incumbent Grover Cleveland in the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote.

John Russell Bartlett (1842-1904) was an American Naval officer and oceanographer who first enrolled in the U.S. Naval Academy in 1859. He would serve throughout most of the Civil War, being promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1864, and later commander in 1877. From November 1878 until 1882, he commanded the oceanographic survey ship George S. Blake of the US Coast and Geodetic Survey, where he discovered, between Jamaica and Cuba, the Bartlett Deep (A.K.A. the Cayman Trough).
