Dear Col. Greene
Thank you very much for the letter you handed me today. We are in agreement on a great many things such as the need to restore our mil. capability. That of course includes rebuilding the C.I.A.
I differ with you somewhat on the draft. I believe we should first rebuild our active reserve to a million man strength, combat trained & armed with the latest weaponry.
We are certainly in agreement on the need for this nation to reaffirm that we are a nation under God. We need a spiritual revival.
Forgive this handwritten scrawl but I wanted you to have a reply without waiting until I get back to my office which will be some weeks from now.
Best Regards
Ronald Reagan

Historical Background
On November 13, 1979, former California governor Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president in a televised speech from New York City. He was the tenth Republican to announce his candidacy. The following day, Reagan appeared at a large evening rally at the National Guard Armory in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Three days before the New Hampshire primary, the Reagan and Bush campaigns agreed to a one-on-one debate in Nashua, but hours before the debate, the Reagan campaign invited other candidates including Bob Dole, John B. Anderson, Howard Baker, and Phil Crane to join the debate. When the moderator denied seats to the other candidates, the Reagan campaign agreed to pay for the debate. When the moderator was laying out the ground rules, Reagan protested that he wanted to make an introductory statement and include the other candidates. When the moderator asked for Reagan's microphone to be turned off, Reagan replied angrily, "I am paying for this microphone!" a statement that turned out to be the turning point of the debate and the campaign. Reagan went on to win the New Hampshire primary by more than 39,000 votes. He won 50 percent of the votes cast in a race among seven candidates; George W. Bush finished a distant second with 23 percent. One of Reagan's most famous quotes "If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under" This was during a speech as President in 1984

In February 1980, Ronald Reagan made the Holiday Inn in Manchester, New Hampshire, his state campaign headquarters, reserving 30 of the motel's 120 rooms. Somewhat centrally located in the small state, Manchester also had William Loeb, the conservative editor and publisher of the Union Leader, the only statewide newspaper in the state. Loeb was also a firm supporter of Ronald Reagan's New Hampshire campaign, though he lived in a rich community on Boston's North Shore. On February 26, Reagan and his wife Nancy Reagan celebrated his first primary victory in the combined Lexington and Concord Banquet Rooms of the Holiday Inn.

The recipient of this letter may have been Abbott O. Greene (1932-2022), of Bangor, Maine, who was a fighter pilot in the Air Force and Marine Air National Guard for twenty-eight years, retiring as a lieutenant-colonel. He also worked as a pilot for TWA from 1964. In 1970, he considered challenging Democrat Edmund A. Muskie for his seat in the U.S. Senate from Maine.

Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) was born in Illinois and graduated from Eureka College in 1932. After working as a radio announcer for several years, he took a screen test in 1937 that led to a contract with Warner Brothers Studios and an acting career in film and television. Reagan served as governor of California from 1967 to 1975. He won election over two-term incumbent Pat Brown. As governor, he opposed the idea of the welfare state and favored less government regulation of the economy. After an unsuccessful attempt to recall him in 1968, Reagan won reelection in 1970 for a second term. He did not seek reelection in 1974 but went on to seek the Presidency in 1976. He narrowly lost the Republican nomination to incumbent Gerald Ford but went on to win in 1980 over Democratic incumbent Jimmy Carter to become the 40th President of the United States (1981-1989).
