Description
FDR Appoints Nathanael Engel as Assistant Director of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce
An appointment nominating and naming Nathanael Engel as Assistant Director of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce (BFDC) signed "Franklin Roosevelt" and countersigned by Secretary of Commerce Daniel C. Roper. Document signed, mounted to stiff board, measuring 16" x 19", January 31, 1934, Washington, D.C. Light, uneven toning to edges, otherwise very good condition. Boldly signed by both!
The BFDC was established in 1912 with the purpose of promoting U.S. trade by compiling and making accessible statistical and other related information on markets both foreign and domestic. The 1929 Stock Market Crash, and subsequently Roosevelt's taking of office during the Great Depression, saw a drastic reduction of activity within the Bureau. Regarding the future of the department, Daniel Roper is quoted as saying, "important under normal conditions, was at this time suffering from the fact that business was in the doghouse."
