Description
Johnson Appoints George L. Choisey to Rank of Captain by Brevet
Partial-printed DS, on vellum, measuring 13.25" x 17.5", May 23, 1865, Washington, D.C. An appoint of Brevet Captain signed by Andrew Johnson and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Johnson names George L. Choisey as "…Captain by Brevet in said army to rank… for gallant services at the Battle of the North Anna River, Virginia". Horizontally signed in the top left corner by Assistant Adjutant General Edward D. Townsend. Expected document folds, toning, and creasing throughout. Overall very good condition with bold signatures.
The Battle of North Anna was fought between May 23-26 1864, so named because of the fording of the North Anna River by Grant and his forces to engage with Confederate troops on the other side. The result of the battle ended in a stalemate, as Union forces started marching towards Cold Harbor, wherein another week-and-a-half long battle would take place just days later which was considered one of the bloodiest on American soil.
