Description

Queen Isabella I Orders Payments for Alms During the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday! Superb

3pp of a bifolium, measuring 8.75" x 12.5", Seville, dated May 11, 1500. Signed "yo la Reyna" which translates to "I the Queen." Written in Spanish, the document orders the Queen's notaries to credit her Chamberlain, Sancho de Paredes, for expenses incurred on behalf of Isabella. Outlined are funds given directly to Isabella herself, money given to the Infantas for alms during the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday, accounts for linen bought for the Queen's use, and payment made to painters. Various other expenses are listed, totaling 53,280 maravedis overall. The document has flattened folds, faint toning, and very light soiling throughout. Cross-cut cancellation marks throughout, some repaired with tape. Large and bold signature.

Isabella I, Queen of Castile (1474-1504) was a Catholic monarch who ruled jointly with her husband Ferdinand II of Aragon. The two monarchs are most celebrated for their patronage of Genoese explorer Christopher Columbus and their subsequent empire-building in the New World, but other legacies include implementing administrative reforms, stabilizing the budget, and reducing crime. However, they are also infamous for establishing the Spanish Inquisition and for issuing the Alhambra Decree which ordered the mass expulsion of Muslims and Jews from Spain. Isabella formally withdrew from governmental affairs in September 1504 and died later that year.
