Description
King William III DS in Dutch, Five Years Before Invasion of England
1p, measuring 6.5" x 9", Hagerden, dated December 6, 1683. A document, written in Dutch, signed by King William III of England as "Prince d'Orange." Addressed to Herr van Rossum, untranslated. With flattened folds, light toning, and minor soiling at the edges. Large and bold signature. Overall, very good.
William III of England (1650-1702), also known as William of Orange, was sovereign prince of Orange (what is now southern France) from birth. In 1685, his Catholic uncle, James, became king of England, Scotland, and Ireland, but was met by opposition by the Protestant majority in Britain. With the support of a group of influential British political and religious leaders, William invaded England in 1688 (known as the Glorious Revolution), and James was quickly deposed. The Protestant William was crowned and he ruled Britain alongside his wife, Queen Mary II. Their reign is popularly referred to as that of "William and Mary."
