Carl Goerdeler, Nazi Opponent, 1936 Signed Letter
GOERDELER, CARL. Typed Letter Signed, “Goerdeler”, in German, as Mayor, 1p, 5.75” x 8.25”, Leipzig, October 17, 1936 to Mr. Lindner, apologizing for not being able to meet as he suddenly became sick with the flu. Goerdeler’s bold signature measures 3” x 1.5”. Stamped and numbered at the top right. Flattened central horizontal fold, two punch holes at left, some stray faint ink marks near signature, slight show-through from mounting residue at the verso, else near fine condition. Untranslated. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity by R & R Enterprises Autograph Auctions.
Carl Friedrich Goerdeler (1884-1945) was a conservative German politician, executive, economist, civil servant, and opponent of the Nazi regime. He was a prominent figure in the resistance movement and in an unsuccessful coup against Adolf Hitler. A longtime mayor of Leipzig, Goerdeler would have served as Chancellor of the new government if the coup to overthrow Hitler had succeeded.
