Description
George V DS Appointing Raj-Era U.S. Vice-Consul at Bombay

A document boldly signed by British monarch George V (1865-1936), as "George R.I." {George R[ex] I[mperator]} at upper left above his royal embossed seal. Issued from the Court at St. James's in London, England on May 19, 1928. Also counter-signed by British Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs Sir Austen Chamberlain (1863-1937) as "Austen Chamberlain" near lower right. The document is partly printed and partly handwritten on fancy watermarked "GVR" paper. Expected wear including flattened folds and minor discoloration along the top edge, with isolated smudges near the corners, else near fine. 18" x 13.5."

George V ruled Great Britain and the British Dominions in addition to serving as Emperor of India during the British Raj, or period of direct British rule. The document authorized the appointment of "Mr Alan S. Rogers" to be U.S. Vice-Consul of Bombay, as modern day Mumbai was then known.

Alan S. Rogers was a career U.S. diplomat from Santa Barbara, California who entered the Foreign Service in July 1927. As we know from this document, Rogers was assigned to serve as U.S. Vice-Consul of Bombay on February 24, 1928. Foreign Service records indicate that Rogers served along with fellow U.S. Vice-Consul William H. Beach and U.S. Consul Wilbur Keblinger at the American consulate at Bombay, where he received an annual salary of $2,500. By August 1930, Rogers was serving as Vice-Consul and Third Secretary at the U.S. Legation at Bangkok, Siam (modern day Thailand.) Rogers moved from Asia to Europe after July 1931. He served as Third Secretary in Paris, France in 1931 before being promoted to U.S. Consul in Vienna from 1935-1936. In 1938, Rogers was stationed in Rome.
