William Paca Fantastic DS, Signer of the Declaration of Independence!
1p of vellum, measuring 11.5" x 9.25", Maryland, dated August 4, 1785. Signed at the top left margin, "Wm Paca" and countersigned by John Rogers Esq. as Chancellor. A land deed awarded to "Henry Richards of Caroline County" by the state of Maryland, "called Richards's Farm lying in Caroline County…To have and to hold the same unto him the said Henry Richards his Heirs and Assigns forever." With a large wax seal, the Great Seal of the State of Maryland, attached to the bottom of the document with ribbon. Docketing on verso. With flattened folds and additional areas of creasing. Toning and soiling throughout, particularly at the folds. Dampstaining at the top has resulted in a tear and paper loss at the right side, with some loss of text. The large seal is still intact.
William Paca (1740-1799) served as a delegate for Maryland at both the First and Second Continental Congress, and was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence. He later served as Governor of Maryland and was appointed by George Washington to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland on December 22, 1789.
