SAMUEL HUNTINGTON, Manuscript Document Signed, Pay Order to Treasurer John Lawrence, May 9, 1777, Hartford, Connecticut. 1 p., 8.25" x 6.75". Expected folds; very good.

Future Connecticut Governor Samuel Huntington, who had signed the Declaration of Independence the year before, and William Pitkin (1725-1789) signed this order to state treasurer John Lawrence (1719-1802) for him to pay county sheriff Jonathan Fitch (1745-1821) £6 for attending an election and distributing government documents. Both Huntington and Pitkin were members of the small Council of Assistants, which served as the upper body of the Connecticut General Assembly from 1698 until 1818, when it was replaced by the state Senate.

Samuel Huntington (1731-1796) was born in Connecticut and admitted to the bar in 1754. He established a practice in Norwich, Connecticut, and served in the legislature and as King's Attorney. As a delegate to the Continental Congress (1776-1781), he was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and was president of Congress (1779-1781) when the Articles of Confederation were adopted. As Governor of Connecticut (1786-1796) he led the battle for Connecticut's ratification of the Federal Constitution, and served in other state posts.
