A free franked envelope by Martin Van Buren signed as Secretary of State. Measuring 7.75" x 3.25" (sight), postmarked Washington, D.C., dated April 16, n.y. [ca. 1829-1831]. Boldly franked at the upper right corner "M. Van Buren" with a red "FREE" stamp below his signature. Addressed in another hand to "His Excellency the Governor of Vermont" (likely Samuel C. Crafts)along with contemporary docketing at the left side which reads "Sec'y US letter concerning Documents for Coledges [sic]." The cover has been matted along with a portrait of Van Buren to the overall size of 18.75" x 13". Light toning and soiling throughout. Circular stain to the center of the address. Bold, large signature.

Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) served as Secretary of State prior to being appointed Vice President under Andrew Jackson in 1833. With Jackson's support backing him, Van Buren went on to win the presidential nomination at the 1835 Democratic National Convention. He won the 1836 presidential election and served as the 8th President of the U.S. from 1837-1841.
