A free franked transmittal cover signed by former 10th U.S. President John Tyler (1790-1862) as "J. Tyler" in the postage section at upper right. Postmarked from Richmond, Virginia on November 6, 1856. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. Addressed in Tyler's hand to "Mrs David Gardiner / Castleton North Shore / Staten Island / New York" at center. Expected wear to the cover including minor soiling and scattered foxing. Else very good to near fine. The transmittal cover measures 5" x 3.25" while the slab measures 7.125" x 4.125."
"Mrs David Gardiner" referred to Juliana MacLachlan Gardiner (1799-1864), President Tyler's mother-in-law. She was the widow of former New York Congressman David Gardiner (1784-1844), who was killed in the explosion aboard the "U.S.S. Princeton" in February 1844. The Gardiners were the parents of Tyler's second wife Julia Gardiner Tyler (1820-1889). The former First Lady's mother relocated to a Greek Revival style mansion in Castleton Hill, Staten Island around 1852.
