Description
William Ellery's ledger, oblong folio in stitched buff paper wrappers. Leaves captioned (at top) "Abstract of Bounty on dried and pickled fish, and salted provision exported from the District of Newport" and dated between 1790 and 1799. 21 leaves, containing the signature of William Ellery on 12 different leaves (mostly to earlier entries.) Water-stained (more pronounced toward back of ledger but present throughout), some fraying/tearing to edges, Fair only, as-is. ****************** William Ellery was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Rhode Island. Later in his career, and until his death, he was the first customs collector of Newport, Rhode Island. The present ledger lists the various vessels, along with the destinations of those vessels, which were exporting dried fish, pickles and other provisions. The destinations of those exports appear to have primarily been the French and Dutch West Indies, Hispaniola, St. Croix, Havana, Turks Islands, Jamaica, and the like – though some were destined for Africa
