Description
Stephen Hopkins, Founding Father, Signed Payment Order

Small slip, measuring 5.625" x 2", Greenwich, dated December 13, 1770. A payment order signed "Step Hopkins C. Jugd." Reading in full: "Please to pay Jonathan Niles Thirty one shillings & one penny and charge the same to the colony." Countersigned by two others, with clipped accounting text related to Niles on verso. The document has been tipped into a small sheet, measuring 7.25" x 3.5" overall. With flattened folds, light toning and soiling. Boldly signed.

Stephen Hopkins (1707-1785) was governor of the Colony of Rhode Island, chief justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, Founding Father, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He signed the document despite suffering from severe palsy in his hands, having to hold his right hand with his left to keep the pen steady, saying "My hand trembles, but my heart does not."
