William Few, Constitution, Declines a Military Commission from GA Governor Telfair
1p of a bifolium, measuring 6.5" x 8.25", No place, dated June 9, 1791. A letter signed "WFew" and addressed to His Excellency Edward Telfair, Governor of Georgia. Few thanks Telfair for the honor of a military promotion, but claims that he is unable to accept it. Reading in full: "Permit me Sir to acknowledge the Honor you have been pleased to confer upon me the Command of the Militia of the County of Columbia and to return you my unfeigned thanks. I am sorry to observe that the peculiar situation of the affairs of that county prevents my accepting of the command, and must therefore request that you will suffer me to return the commission." With flattened mail folds and light toning. Moderate to heavy dampstaining throughout. Rough edges. Boldly signed.
William Few Jr. (1748-1828) was a Founding Father of the United States and represented Georgia at the Constitutional Convention, signing the U.S. Constitution. During the Revolutionary War, Few joined the Richmond County Regiment with his brother. He proved to be an adept strategic administrator and commander of Georgia's military force.
