Description
George Clinton Signed Military Commission as Governor of New York, 1789

A 1p partially printed and partially handwritten military commission signed by acting 1st Governor of New York George Clinton (1739-1812) as "Geo Clinton" with an elaborately looping underline at upper left. Issued from New York City on June 15, 1789. Co-signed by acting Secretary of State of New York Robert Harper at lower left. An embossed seal, probably the state Excelsior seal, is a little unclear and discolored at upper left. On bifold paper, docketed verso. Overall moderate toning and lightly foxed. Expected folds, with small archival support to the fold lines, and a few folds brittle with small holes, else very good to near fine. Folded to a completed size of 12.25" x 7.75."

Governor George Clinton authorized the appointment of "James Christie Lieutenant Colonel Commandant of a Regiment of Militia in the City and County of New York."

George Clinton served in a colonial militia during the French and Indian War, and later in the Continental Army while serving his first stint as 1st Governor of New York between 1777-1795. The New York trained lawyer later reprised the governorship between 1801-1804. He also served as Vice-President of the United States under both the Jefferson and Madison administrations.

James Christie (1744-1817) served as a captain during the Revolutionary War and was associated with General Nathaniel Heard's brigade from New Jersey. Christie is purported to have participated at the Battle of Hackensack. He is buried at South Church (a former Dutch Reformed Church) at Bergenfield, New Jersey.
