Description

A fine old carved wooden Kuba Itoombwa Divination implement in zoomorphic form with incised designs and some signs of light handling. Such divination tools were considered to be quite accurate when used by the village chiefs and priests to mediate between diviners and omniscient nature spirits in order to determine the cause of illnesses and appropriate courses of treatment, as well as to expose dishonesty. Kuba peoples, DRC/ Congo, Africa. The oracle measures 14 inches long. Provenance: Ex. Jacques Hautelet, CA. C. 1988; Ex. Netzer collection, NY.
