West Africa, Nigeria, Ogoni peoples, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden antelope mask known as a karikpo depicting a face with enormous eyes, a slender, sharply-angled nose, full lips, and a massive pair of horns, all covered in brown pigment. The karikpo mask is traditionally used early in the agricultural season as a primary figure in ceremonies that honor the local founding ancestor. The Ogoni people have sustained rich farming lands of the Niger River Delta. Size: 3.9" L x 4.125" W x 10" H (9.9 cm x 10.5 cm x 25.4 cm)
