Description
This is an old and field used carved wooden mask from the Ogoni peoples, Nigeria, West Africa. Masks of this type are known as "elu" , which means "spirit." It is relatively small and probably would have only covered half of the face, with a simple mechanism to allow the wearer to move the jaw for use in masquerades or spirit. Historically, masks were worn in ritual performances for funerals and when yams were planted and harvested. More recently they appear at Christmas and New Year celebrations and to welcome important visitors. The mask measures 8 x 6 inches. The Jaw is now loose, the original rattan has worn away. I can re-attach with new string if you like.
Condition
fair, well weathered and worn. Old rattan grass that attached the jaw has worn away.
