Description
This is a very rare and unusual mask from the Kwese peoples of the Congo, central Africa. Hand hammered brass mask with lavish adornment , including glass beads, textile remains and even an old bullet shell, The mask features raised linear and round spot designs. In Kwese society, sacred masks kept in small communal shrines perform at initiation ceremonies and on other occasions to promote social well-being, health, and abundance. The mask itself measures 11 x 10 inches, not counting the hanging regalia.
Condition
Weathered edges and obvious signs of field use and wear, with some green and red patina forming on the interior, otherwise in Good condition.
