East Africa, Ethiopia/ Kenya, Boorana (Borena) or Turkana culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A lidded storage jar hand-carved from wood and covered with a goat hide and attached leather carrying straps. The rim exterior is encircled with cords threaded through holes drilled through the wood; as the cords aged and dried, they became nearly embedded into the rim- strengthening the vessel. The matching lid is held in place by leather cords - the perfect travel canteen for transporting liquids. The interior is darkened from use with a slightly greasy texture and the distinctive odor that comes from holding milk, the fat seeps into the wood and creates a musky scent. The semi-nomadic groups in the Horn of Africa relied heavily and almost exclusively on their livestock for food and survival - as exemplified by this jar. Fraying to straps on lid and cracking / stiffening of carrying strap. Some losses to hair on the goat hide. Vessel is overall great used / antique condition. Dark and greasy interior of vessel from use. Evidence of fat / milk storage due to light odor which is not very strong.
