Description
This is a very rare and unusual wooden bowl, likely used in Divination and rich with symbiology. The carved wooden bowl is embellished with iron avian bird images, 16 ( 15 now, one lost long ago) around the perimeter and a stone Celt sealed into the center of the bowl. 16 is a symbolic number that refers to the sixteen palm nuts and the sixteen odu or chapters of the corpus of verses spoken by the Yoruba priest during ceremonies of the Ifa oracle. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, West Africa. Provenance: Ex Evan Maurer collection, Ca ( Noted historian and author of several African Art books)
