A monumental and ancient carved wooden Offering shrine or bowl featuring a female Figure, Yoruba peoples, Igbomina region, Nigeria, Late 19th to mid-20th century, Wood, paint.This is a bowl carrier or arugba is from a shrine dedicated to the god Shango, most likely from the village of Oke Onigbin. Shango, the god of thunder, punishes wrongdoers and rewards the devout by giving them children. This woman is a devotee, humble before her god, shown kneeling. A classic female as the central support, embellished with red mineral pigments and carved from a single piece of incredibly heavy and dense wood. Yoruba peoples, Nigeria, Africa. The Bowl bearer measures 21 inches tall by 12 inches wide. Provenance: Drs. Israel and Michaela Samuelly, New York.

Heavily eroded and weathered, what remains is as strong as steel, incredible heavy dense wood.
