A finely cast bronze double edan staff piece, used by the Ogboni or Oshugbo, one of the most prominent Yoruba religious cult societies, which worships the owner of the earth, Onile. The prime function of the cult is to harmonise all spirits and forces of nature. The edan were worn around initiates necks, as symbols of rank, at society meetings as well as religious ceremonies and considered powerful magic. Yoruba Ogboni peoples, Nigeria. This bronze section of a staff measures 16.5 inches tall on the custom 5 x 5 inch base. Provenance: Ex Sol & Josephine Levitt collection, New York.
